The underlying Russell RAFI US Large Company Index offers fundamentally weighted exposure to larger U.S. companies selected from the FTSE Global Total Cap universe after a liquidity screen designed to capture ~95% of FTSE All-World trading liquidity (securities with persistently low DTV/ATVR are removed). Securities are ranked by fundamental size using the average of adjusted sales, retained operating cash flow, and dividends plus buybacks; the Large Company variant selects the largest names by this composite and weights each proportionally to its fundamental size. Capacity controls cap any single security’s index share so that a USD 5bn portfolio would not hold more than 5% of a company’s float. The index undergoes an annual review in March (based on end-January data) and implements changes in four quarterly tranches effective after the third Friday of March, June, September, and December.

Investment Proposition

Schwab Fundamental U.S. Large Company Index ETF (FNDX) delivers large-cap U.S. equity exposure using fundamental size metrics—such as sales, cash flow, and dividends plus buybacks—to determine constituent weights rather than market capitalization. This rules-based process periodically rebalances toward companies with solid fundamentals whose prices have lagged, embedding a contrarian tilt that tends to emphasize value and profitability within the large-cap universe while maintaining broad sector representation. The approach can lag during narrow, momentum-driven leadership phases and may benefit when performance broadens or valuations compress toward fundamentals. In portfolios, it fits as a core large-cap alternative for investors seeking long-term growth with a valuation-aware discipline, as a factor-completion sleeve to counterbalance growth or momentum tilts, or as a satellite to reduce reliance on the largest names. Typical users include strategic allocators pursuing durable, rules-based equity exposures and multifactor practitioners integrating value-quality characteristics alongside other styles. One fund-specific consideration is that periodic reconstitution and trading to realign weights with fundamentals can raise turnover and implementation costs relative to traditional cap-weighted approaches, warranting attention to trading practices.
