The underlying MSCI USA IMI Materials 25/50 Index targets comprehensive US materials exposure across large, mid, and small caps from the MSCI US Investable Market universe and then applies a 25/50 diversification overlay. An optimizer minimizes tracking error to the pro forma parent sector while enforcing: no single group entity >25% and the aggregate of >5% group entities ≤50%, implemented with 10% buffers at rebalance (22.5%/45%). Additional controls cap each constituent at ≤4× its parent weight and set a floor equal to the smallest parent weight to avoid tiny holdings. “Group entity” aggregates share classes and companies under common control. The index rebalances quarterly (end of February, May, August, November), with ongoing corporate-event maintenance; if the number of group entities falls, buffers relax per a defined ladder to keep the solution feasible.

Investment Proposition

Fidelity MSCI Materials Index ETF (FMAT) targets the U.S. materials sector, offering exposure to chemicals, metals and mining, containers and packaging, and construction materials—an equity proxy on global industrial activity and commodity supply-demand cycles. The fund seeks market-like returns from a diversified, rules-based portfolio with generally low turnover, capturing secular and cyclical drivers without active security selection. Style traits can tilt toward value and cyclicality, with cash flows influenced by pricing power, input costs, and currency moves; dividend income is commonplace but not the primary return engine. FMAT can benefit during reflationary periods, infrastructure buildouts, and synchronized manufacturing recoveries, while weaker global growth, falling commodity prices, a strengthening dollar, or regulatory burdens may challenge performance. As a building block, it can serve as a diversification sleeve, an equity inflation-sensitivity proxy, or a tactical overlay for commodity-linked exposure within equities. Suitable investors include multi-asset allocators seeking cyclical balance to growth leadership and sector-rotation practitioners expressing views on industrial metals and chemical spreads. A key risk to monitor is heightened sensitivity to commodity cycles and event risk—such as operational or environmental incidents—which can raise volatility relative to broad equities.
