The underlying FTSE Australia RIC Capped Index provides free float adjusted, capitalisation weighted exposure to Australian large and mid cap equities while limiting single issuer concentration. The index is derived from the FTSE Australia Index, itself built from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series by selecting Australian incorporated or primarily listed ordinary and preferred shares that meet free float, voting rights and liquidity screens. Eligible companies must satisfy minimum investable market cap and 12 month trading activity thresholds, so small or illiquid names are excluded at review. Constituents are weighted by free float adjusted market cap, then a quarterly capping process limits any issuer to 25% of index weight and requires the combined weight of issuers above 5% to stay at or below 50%. The underlying universe is reviewed semi annually in March and September using market cap banding to maintain stable large and mid cap size segments.

Investment Proposition

Franklin FTSE Australia ETF (FLAU) presents concentrated exposure to Australia’s large- and mid-cap equity market, providing access to an economy with substantial links to commodities, housing, and regional trade. The portfolio’s cap-weighted construction often emphasizes financials and resources, blending income potential with cyclical sensitivity to terms-of-trade and domestic credit conditions. Return drivers include commodity pricing, China/Asia demand for raw materials, and the health of Australia’s banking system, while risks rise when global growth slows, property activity softens, or the Australian dollar moves sharply. Style tilts typically reflect value, dividends, and cyclicals, which can diverge from global growth-led equity leadership at times. In asset allocation, FLAU can function as a targeted regional sleeve, a commodity-linked equity tilt, or an income-oriented satellite complementing global cores, with currency exposure providing an additional lever for diversification or opportunistic positioning. It suits investors pursuing deliberate exposure to resources-heavy developed markets or CIOs using regional factors to refine portfolio balance. Key risk to monitor: sector concentration—particularly financials and materials—which can magnify cyclical drawdowns relative to more diversified country baskets.
