The underlying Fidelity Dividend Index for Rising Rates targets large- and mid-cap dividend payers most resilient to rising U.S. Treasury yields. The U.S. universe begins with the largest 1,000 stocks that pass investability screens (90-day ADV ≥ USD 50 million; free float ≥ 15%); non-U.S. developed names may be included but are capped at 10% of the portfolio. Within each GICS sector, eligible stocks must have a current dividend and avoid the highest 5% by payout ratio; selection is by a size-neutralized composite: dividend yield (63%), payout ratio (13.5%), dividend growth (13.5%), and correlation of weekly returns to weekly changes in the 10-year Treasury yield (10%). Weighting is sector-based: each constituent receives its parent market-cap weight plus an equal active overweight within its sector to reduce concentration. The index rebalances annually over four trading days starting the third Friday of February.

Investment Proposition

Fidelity Dividend ETF for Rising Rates (FDRR) presents a rules-based dividend equity approach designed to emphasize companies with durable payouts and characteristics historically associated with resilience when interest rates trend higher. The methodology screens for quality, dividend growth durability, and rate sensitivity, producing a large-/mid-cap portfolio with a cash-flow and balance-sheet tilt; turnover is systematic and generally moderate. Expect total-return focus with a meaningful income component, style exposures that can lean quality/value, and sector tilts that typically favor economically sensitive dividend payers over bond-proxy defensives when rate risks dominate. The strategy may be timely when inflation expectations normalize and yield curves reprice, yet can trail in falling-rate, defensive, or high-duration growth leadership phases. Portfolio roles include income with a macro tilt, a factor sleeve for dividend quality aligned to rate risk management, or a diversification tool alongside core equities and bonds during tightening cycles. Suitable investors include income-oriented allocators seeking equity yield less exposed to duration headwinds and policy portfolios implementing rate-aware equity income. Key risk to monitor: factor regime dependency that may hamper relative outcomes if leadership rotates to high-duration growth or defensives.
