Eligible names are ranked by float-adjusted market cap within two sub-segments—Internet Services and Internet Commerce—and the index selects 40 constituents split between the two sub-indices. Constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market cap, with a 10% cap per company and an aggregate cap of 45% on all constituents with weights ≥4.5% to mitigate concentration. The index reconstitutes and rebalances quarterly, applying buffers and caps at each review to manage turnover while preserving exposure to larger, more liquid internet franchises.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Dow Jones Internet Index Fund (FDN) delivers concentrated U.S. exposure to companies whose revenues are predominantly derived from internet-based activities, supplying a liquid vehicle for accessing platform economics, online commerce, digital advertising, and cloud-enabled services. The strategy applies rules-based selection and weighting to capture larger, established operators while allowing for meaningful participation in scaled challengers; this creates a pronounced growth tilt and a sensitivity to sentiment around innovation, margins, and long-duration cash flows. Return patterns tend to be amplified in both directions—benefiting from periods of abundant liquidity, productivity narratives, and secular adoption, while facing headwinds when rates rise or regulation tightens. Use cases include a satellite growth sleeve, thematic allocation to the digital economy, and factor completion for investors underweight innovation. Typical users are equity allocators comfortable with sector concentration and multi-asset investors employing targeted tilts within otherwise diversified cores. Pro-risk backdrops and stable credit conditions are supportive; late-cycle slowdowns and factor rotations toward value or defensives can be challenging. A fund-specific risk to monitor is high industry concentration, which may magnify drawdowns during sector stress.
