The underlying Dow Jones International Internet Index offers concentrated, float-adjusted market-capitalization exposure to non-U.S. internet companies drawn from the S&P Global Ex-US BMI. The parent universe includes developed and emerging markets and requires constituents to have at least USD 100 million in float-adjusted market cap plus minimum six- and twelve-month median value-traded liquidity. Within this universe, the index retains issuers whose primary business is internet commerce or internet services and that derive a majority of revenues from online activities. Eligible stocks are ranked by float-adjusted market cap and the 40 largest, most liquid names are selected. Constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market cap, with individual weights capped at 10% and the aggregate of holdings above roughly 4.5% capped at 45% to limit concentration. The index is reconstituted and rebalanced quarterly, simultaneously reassessing theme eligibility, size and liquidity.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Dow Jones International Internet ETF (FDNI) provides targeted exposure to non-U.S. companies whose primary businesses are tied to internet platforms, services, and commerce, offering a focused way to access global digital adoption outside the United States. The strategy emphasizes scalable, asset-light models with high operating leverage, accepting sector and business-model concentration to pursue growth driven by network effects and data moats. Resulting portfolios often tilt toward large, established franchises while retaining room for selective mid-cap innovators; turnover tends to reflect periodic rebalances of fast-evolving incumbents rather than high-frequency trading. Performance can be cyclical: demand for online advertising, payments, and e-commerce is typically pro-cyclical, while subscription and cloud services may partially cushion slower phases. Role and use cases include satellite growth allocation, thematic mandate for digital economy exposure, and factor completion for innovation-oriented sleeves. Suitable investors include growth allocators seeking diversified ex-U.S. digital exposure and global multi-asset managers aiming to balance U.S. tech concentration. Environments of improving risk appetite and easing financial conditions are supportive; rising regulation, currency volatility, or style rotations away from growth are key challenges. Monitor portfolio concentration as a principal fund-specific risk.
