The underlying Fidelity Emerging Markets Multifactor Index targets large- and mid-cap emerging-market stocks selected from the 1,000 largest free-float names (S&P EM plus South Korea), after investability screens excluding the bottom quintile by days to trade USD 10 million and securities with free float <15%. Within each industry and country-sector cell, securities receive a composite score combining value (FCF yield, EV/EBITDA, tangible book/price, and next-twelve-months earnings/price), quality, momentum, and low-volatility measures, with alternative factor weights for banks. The highest-scoring stocks are chosen within each sector; portfolio construction assigns equal active weights and then reallocates 25% of sector weight toward sectors least correlated with the U.S. market to moderate U.S. beta. The index reconstitutes and rebalances semi-annually, with ongoing maintenance for corporate actions and sanctions. (institutional.fidelity.com)

Investment Proposition

Fidelity Emerging Markets Multifactor ETF (FDEM) provides rules-based exposure to emerging-market equities using a diversified set of compensated factors. The strategy targets a balanced blend of quality, value, momentum, and volatility screens to improve the trade-off between return potential and active risk relative to broad emerging benchmarks, while controlling country and sector imbalances. By design, factor emphasis can evolve with the model, leading to style tilts that may occasionally diverge from investor expectations or macro narratives. The resulting portfolio seeks broad representation with risk controls intended to reduce unintended exposures and manage turnover. In portfolios, FDEM can serve as a core EM building block with a systematic edge, a factor-completion tool to complement cap-weighted holdings, or a disciplined sleeve within risk-parity or model-driven allocations. Suitable investors include asset allocators seeking consistent, repeatable factor implementation in less efficient markets and RIAs running model portfolios that balance cost, breadth, and structure. The approach can be supported in regimes where valuation dispersion and earnings quality drive differentiation and can lag in sharp beta-led rallies or abrupt leadership rotations. A key risk to monitor is model specification and rebalancing turnover that can impact trading costs.
