The underlying Lunt Capital Large Cap Factor Rotation Index delivers exposure to U.S. large-cap common stocks and REITs through four of eight 50-stock factor sleeves drawn from the Nasdaq US 500 Large Cap Index, the 500 largest securities. High and low sleeves span momentum, value, volatility and quality. Momentum averages price returns over 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months; volatility uses realized volatility over those horizons; value uses growth and value style scores; quality ranks pricing power. Monthly, sleeves are ranked by risk-adjusted relative strength, selecting the top four while prohibiting both sides of one factor. Sleeves inherit departing sleeves’ weights; if all four change, each receives 25%, while retained weights stay unchanged. Pass-through weights differ by sleeve: score-weighted momentum, value and volatility; quality uses 4%, 2.33% and 1% rank tiers. The index reconstitutes monthly on the fourth business day; momentum, value and volatility sleeves rebalance semiannually, quality annually.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Lunt U.S. Factor Rotation ETF (FCTR) provides adaptive exposure to U.S. large-cap equities by rotating among momentum, value, quality and low-volatility factors, including the capacity to shift between the “conventional” and “opposite” sides of each style when relative leadership changes. The rules-based approach seeks to harvest factor dispersion while avoiding prolonged over-commitment to any single tilt, with allocations reviewed on a disciplined schedule that can result in meaningful turnover. Resulting portfolios typically emphasize style purity over sector neutrality, so industry weights can drift versus broad benchmarks when a factor is in favor. Returns are driven by the breadth and persistence of factor cycles; the strategy may benefit during clear leadership regimes and can lag when leadership is narrow or rapidly mean-reverting. Practical uses include a satellite sleeve for factor completion, a tactical overlay to adjust equity style risk, or a research “sandbox” to express top-down views on factor rotation. Suitable investors include allocators using systematic tilts within diversified equity, and tacticians seeking a rules-driven style-timing sleeve. Key risk to monitor is model turnover and potential whipsaw during choppy rotations.
