The underlying Fidelity Stocks for Inflation Factor Index targets large- and mid-cap U.S. common stocks selected from the top 1,000 by free-float market cap after excluding ADRs, limited partnerships, BDCs, closed-end funds, UITs, and mutual funds. Eligible stocks receive factor z-scores (value, quality, momentum); value blends tangible book-to-price and next-12-month earnings-to-price; quality blends ROE and debt-to-assets. Within each GICS sector, the highest-scoring names are chosen, aiming for ~100 stocks, and “equal-active-weighting” adds the same overweight to each selected security relative to its market-cap weight. Sector weights are then tilted 25% in aggregate toward inflation-sensitive pillars—Commodities (Energy, Materials), Pricing Power (Consumer Staples, Health Care), and Real Assets & Infrastructure—implemented as 5% adjustments by pillar components and offset from Other sectors. The index reconstitutes and rebalances semiannually on the third Friday of February and August.

Investment Proposition

Fidelity Stocks for Inflation ETF (FCPI) targets U.S. equities with business models and sector exposures that historically align with rising input costs and price levels, seeking to benefit from companies that can maintain or expand margins when inflation pressures persist. The rules-based approach emphasizes industries with pricing power, tangible-asset backing, or revenue tied to nominal activity, while balancing diversification to avoid overreliance on any single macro driver. Return potential is linked to the relative performance of inflation-sensitive sectors versus the broader market; dividend income is secondary and varies with constituent policies. The fund’s tilt may shine when inflation expectations are firm, real assets are supported, and nominal growth is steady, and may lag in disinflationary or policy-tightening phases that favor duration-sensitive growth franchises. Portfolio roles include an inflation-aware tactical overlay, a satellite diversifier within an equity sleeve, and a factor completion tool to counterbalance duration exposure from growth-heavy holdings. Suitable users include macro-tilters managing regime risks and wealth managers seeking pragmatic inflation hedging within equities. Key risk: methodology concentration if inflation leadership narrows or regime shifts reduce the efficacy of historical sensitivities.
