The underlying MSCI Emerging Markets Quality Factor Select Index offers a quality-tilted slice of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. The universe is all large- and mid-cap constituents of the parent index. Each security receives a Quality Score that combines winsorized, standardized measures of return on equity, debt-to-equity and earnings variability, so more profitable, lower-leverage and more stable earners rank highest. Within each country, stocks are sorted by this score and added in order until they represent 50% of that country’s free-float market-cap weight in the parent. Selected names are then given tilt multipliers based on both Quality Score and their position in the cumulative quality coverage, with higher-ranked stocks receiving multipliers above 1 and lower-ranked stocks below 1. Final index weights are proportional to parent index weights times these multipliers, subject to concentration caps on single stocks, sectors and countries, and are refreshed at MSCI’s semi-annual index reviews.

Investment Proposition

iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Quality Factor ETF (EQLT) offers targeted exposure to emerging-market equities screened for durable profitability, stable earnings and prudent balance sheets, seeking a higher-quality tilt within the asset class. The strategy uses a transparent, rules-based selection and weighting process that emphasizes companies with stronger fundamentals relative to local peers, which can moderate downside participation versus broad emerging markets while still maintaining equity beta. Investors should expect modest concentration by country and industry where quality characteristics cluster, and periodic rebalances that can elevate turnover. Returns are typically more resilient in late-cycle slowdowns, policy tightening and risk-discriminating markets, and may lag in sharp, liquidity-led rallies or early-cycle rebounds when lower-quality cyclicals lead. As a portfolio tool it can serve as a satellite EM sleeve, a factor-completion building block for quality exposure, or a risk-aware complement to a broad EM core. Suitable users include multi-asset allocators pursuing factor diversification, and advisors seeking a steadier EM equity profile for long-term clients. A key risk to monitor is factor crowding and resulting valuation premia that could compress prospective excess returns.
