The underlying Solactive-ProShares Bricks and Mortar Retail Store Index provides exposure to legacy US retailers whose sales rely predominantly on physical stores. From the US retail universe, eligible companies must derive at least 50% of total revenue from retail operations and at least 75% of retail revenue from in-store sales, explicitly tilting away from e-commerce–centric models. Securities must be US-domiciled common stocks with minimum market cap of 500 million USD and six-month average daily traded value of at least 1 million USD, ensuring tradability and capacity. All qualifying names are equally weighted, so index risk is driven by stock selection rather than size, and no additional issuer caps are required. The index is reconstituted annually to refresh membership and is rebalanced monthly back to equal weights, with interim deletions generally not replaced until the next annual review.

Investment Proposition

ProShares Decline of the Retail Store ETF (EMTY) targets inverse exposure to U.S. retailers with physical store footprints, seeking to benefit when traditional store-based models lag. The fund pursues a daily short objective via derivatives, resetting exposure each day to maintain its target; compounding can cause multi-day returns to diverge from the inverse of the underlying basket. The strategy uses liquid instruments with risk controls around rebalancing, and holds collateral in short-duration vehicles. Return drivers include shifts in consumer behavior, competitive pressure from digital channels, labor and occupancy costs, and macro variables shaping discretionary spending and financing. Potential roles include a concentration hedge for portfolios with brick-and-mortar exposure, a tactical overlay to express a structural view on retail disruption, or a satellite sleeve in thematic mandates. Suitable users include managers offsetting idiosyncratic retail risk within consumer-heavy allocations and traders employing hedges over horizons. The approach can be favored when foot-traffic, pricing power, and balance-sheet flexibility deteriorate, and can be challenged in consumer upcycles or easing financial conditions. A fund-specific risk to monitor is path dependency from the daily inverse reset, which can increase divergence from longer-horizon expectations during volatile markets.
