The underlying Bloomberg Emerging Market USD Sovereign and Sovereign Owned Index delivers market-value-weighted exposure to fixed-rate USD debt from emerging-market sovereign and sovereign-owned/guaranteed issuers. Eligible bonds must have ≥ USD 500 million par outstanding, remaining maturity ≥ 2 years, and original maturity > 5 years. A 5% country cap by amount outstanding curbs concentration; rating floors/caps bound credit quality within the sovereign/quasi-sovereign universe. Issues are included across the EM sovereign and government-owned spectrum; securities must be USD-denominated and fixed-rate (floaters and non-USD excluded). Constituents are weighted by amount outstanding subject to the country cap; no issuer-level caps beyond the sovereign/quasi-sovereign framework. The index reconstitutes and rebalances monthly on the last business day, applying rules-based updates to amounts outstanding and eligibility.

Investment Proposition

State Street SPDR Bloomberg Emerging Markets USD Bond ETF (EMHC) provides broad, USD-denominated exposure to sovereign and quasi-sovereign bonds from emerging economies, offering a single-ticket approach to external EM credit. The strategy seeks to capture spread-driven total return by sampling a diversified set of issuers across regions and ratings, maintaining investability and liquidity considerations while limiting idiosyncratic concentration. Return potential is primarily linked to credit spreads and term premia rather than local-currency moves, with performance typically sensitive to global risk appetite, changes in U.S. rate expectations, and cross-border capital flows. The portfolio can behave cyclically—benefiting when growth stabilizes and funding conditions ease, while challenged during flight-to-quality phases or tightening liquidity. In asset allocation, it can serve as an EM debt core, a diversified income sleeve, or a tactical overlay to express views on spread compression versus developed rates. Suitable investors include multi-asset income allocators seeking differentiated credit beta and global bond strategists building diversified sovereign exposures alongside developed duration. A key risk to monitor is liquidity and capacity during stress, as selloffs can widen bid-ask costs and amplify tracking and execution slippage.
