The underlying S&P BMI Emerging Markets Low Volatility Index delivers a defensive tilt by selecting the 200 least volatile stocks from the S&P Emerging Plus LargeMidCap universe, which covers float-adjusted large- and mid-caps (typically the top ~85% by market cap in each emerging market, including South Korea) that meet S&P Global BMI investability and liquidity standards. Volatility is measured as the trailing 12-month (approximately 252 trading days) standard deviation of daily local-currency price returns. All eligible names are ranked by volatility; the 200 lowest are included. Constituents are weighted proportionally to 1/volatility, giving higher weights to the least volatile stocks; there are no explicit sector caps, and country/sector weights are outcomes of the selection. The index is reviewed and rebalanced quarterly to refresh the 12-month lookback and update inverse-volatility weights, thereby maintaining the minimum-volatility selection within the eligible large/mid-cap universe.

Investment Proposition

Invesco S&P Emerging Markets Low Volatility ETF (EELV) targets a defensive path to emerging-markets equities by systematically emphasizing stocks with historically lower price variability, aiming to reduce drawdown sensitivity while maintaining broad regional exposure. The methodology often tilts toward defensive sectors and steadier business models, which can moderate volatility and income variability but may lag during sharp cyclical upswings. Risk and return characteristics are shaped by currency moves, policy paths, and commodity dynamics across emerging economies, with the strategy designed to cushion against market stress more than to maximize upside capture. As part of an asset allocation, EELV can act as a diversification sleeve for investors seeking a “sleep-well” EM entry point, a stabilizer around more growth-oriented holdings, or a lower-beta bridge for gradual EM adoption. Suitable users include cautious allocators introducing EM exposure with tempered volatility, and income-aware investors who prefer steadier cash-flow profiles from select EM sectors. It may be favored during risk-off episodes or disinflationary slowdowns, and challenged in momentum-driven rallies. Key risk to monitor: unintended country/sector concentration from the low-volatility selection process.
