The universe comprises coupon and principal STRIPS backed by the U.S. Treasury; TIPS, bills, floaters, and agency or corporates are excluded. Securities must meet standard Bloomberg Treasury index investability and pricing criteria. The index weights constituents by equal par across the 20–30-year maturity span, producing a long effective duration; weights then float with market moves until the next rebalance. New qualifying STRIPS enter and matured/called components exit through regular maintenance. The index is maintained monthly on a calendar month-end schedule, with rebalancing/ reconstitution at each month-end to preserve the 20–30-year maturity window and equal-par structure.

Investment Proposition

Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF (EDV) targets pronounced interest-rate sensitivity through a portfolio emphasizing long-maturity U.S. Treasury cash flows, concentrating duration and convexity to amplify price responses to moves in the risk-free curve. The philosophy centers on pure Treasury exposure without corporate credit risk, positioning returns to be driven largely by shifts in real rates and term premia rather than coupon carry. Volatility can be elevated, with favorable regimes typically including disinflationary trends, flight-to-quality episodes, and easing cycles; challenging conditions include persistent inflation pressure, rising rate environments, or abrupt steepenings. The fund may exhibit low or negative correlation to risk assets during stress, enhancing diversification. Use cases include a duration anchor within liability-aware or risk-parity frameworks, a tail-risk and drawdown-management sleeve for equity-heavy portfolios, and a tactical tool for investors expressing a view on long-end yields. Suitable users include institutions requiring long-duration hedges and tactical allocators seeking convexity. A fund-specific risk to monitor is extreme rate sensitivity, which can produce large mark-to-market swings and demands disciplined sizing and rebalancing.
