Candidates must show positive earnings per share over the latest 12 months and stable or increasing dividend growth over three years. Securities are ranked by risk-adjusted yield, defined as trailing dividend yield divided by the volatility of dividend yields over a multi-year window; the top 100 passing investability screens are chosen. Constituents are weighted by trailing 12-month dividend yield, subject to diversification limits: no single stock above 3%, and no country or GICS sector above 25%. The index is rebalanced and reconstituted semiannually, effective after the last business day of January and July, allowing both selection and weights to reset systematically as yields and risk profiles change.

Investment Proposition

State Street SPDR S&P Emerging Markets Dividend ETF (EDIV) targets dividend-paying companies across emerging markets, emphasizing cash distribution characteristics that can introduce a value and income tilt relative to broad EM universes. The approach seeks to select and weight stocks by dividend attributes, which can reduce exposure to high-growth, nonearning names while increasing allocation to mature sectors such as financials, utilities, and select cyclicals. Income levels and payout stability will vary across regimes; supportive backdrops typically include moderating inflation, stable policy rates, and improving corporate balance sheets, while tightening cycles or commodity shocks can pressure payouts. The fund’s role fits income sleeves in diversified EM allocations, a yield-oriented satellite to global equity income strategies, or a complement to growth-heavy EM exposures for balance. It often attracts investors prioritizing cash flows and valuation discipline or those implementing multi-factor EM lineups that pair quality and dividend screens. A fund-specific risk to monitor is dividend sustainability and potential sector concentration, as methodology-driven overweights can heighten exposure to payout cuts, regulatory changes, or capital-intensive industries during downturns.
