The underlying Harbor AlphaEdge Small Cap Earners Index targets profitable U.S. small-cap equities by starting from all constituents of the Russell 2000 Index, which represents the small-cap segment of the U.S. market based on free-float market cap. From this universe, every company that meets a two-step profitability test over the prior 12 quarters is included: both the median trailing 12-month operating margin across those quarters and the aggregate operating margin over the full 12-quarter period must be ≥1%. Operating margin is defined as operating income divided by sales. All issuers passing these screens, including REITs, enter the index without further quality or size tilts. Constituents are then weighted in proportion to their profitability over the trailing three-year period rather than by market cap, emphasizing consistent earners. The index is fully rules-based and is reconstituted and rebalanced twice annually.

Investment Proposition

Harbor AlphaEdge Small Cap Earners ETF (EBIT) targets profitable U.S. small-cap companies using a rules-driven selection and weighting process centered on earnings quality. By emphasizing businesses with demonstrated profitability and capital discipline, the strategy seeks a cleaner small-cap beta expression with a structural quality tilt, while preserving breadth across industries. Expected style exposures skew toward quality and, at times, toward reasonable valuation and cash-flow stability; momentum signals can influence constituent weights via periodic rebalancing. The fund is typically most resilient during phases when credit remains accessible and operating margins are rewarded, and it may lag in speculative risk-on bursts favoring unprofitable growth or in sharp downturns when small caps broadly de-rate. Portfolio roles include a small-cap sleeve emphasizing quality factors, a factor-completion tool to offset exposure to unprofitable constituents elsewhere, and a satellite allocation for potential alpha versus naive small-cap proxies. Suitable users include multi-asset allocators implementing a persistent quality bias and advisors constructing barbell exposures with large-cap core holdings. A key risk to monitor is higher turnover from disciplined reconstitutions, which can introduce trading frictions and tax inefficiencies if not contained by methodology.
