The underlying Dow Jones Emerging Markets Select Dividend Index targets 100 higher-yielding stocks from the Dow Jones Emerging Markets universe. Eligible companies must have a sustained dividend record with non-negative five-year dividend-per-share growth and acceptable dividend coverage relative to earnings; securities with excessively high payout ratios or insufficient trading liquidity are excluded. From this filtered set, constituents are selected by indicated annual dividend yield and weighted by that yield, subject to diversification controls that cap single-stock weights and limit country and sector concentration. The index is reconstituted annually to refresh the high-yield cohort and rebalanced to maintain constituent, sector, and country limits, with corporate actions reflected using standard index maintenance procedures to limit turnover.

Investment Proposition

iShares Emerging Markets Dividend ETF (DVYE) delivers exposure to high-dividend stocks across emerging markets, emphasizing companies with established distribution profiles and payout discipline. The methodology typically skews toward value-oriented sectors and mature business models, leading to factor tilts that can dampen sensitivity to speculative growth while increasing exposure to cash-generative franchises. Income potential is central, though dividends in emerging markets can be less stable and influenced by currency moves, commodity cycles, and regulatory settings. The approach may shine when global risk appetite favors cash flow resilience and when inflationary backdrops support pricing power in utilities, financials, and natural-resource industries; it can lag in momentum-driven growth phases or when dividend cuts propagate through cyclical downturns. As an income sleeve or value-tilt satellite, it can diversify a core EM allocation and complement growth-heavy exposures. Income-oriented allocators and multi-asset managers seeking yield diversification across currencies and sectors are typical users. Key risk to monitor: sector and country concentration arising from dividend screens, which can elevate drawdown risk if policy shifts or commodity regimes turn adverse.
