The underlying Syntax Defined Volatility US Large Cap 500 Index targets volatility-managed exposure to the US large-cap equity market via the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust. The index holds a core long position in the underlying ETF and dynamically overlays either an additional swap exposure or a cash position. Each trading day it compares the ETF’s 21-day realized volatility to a longer-term realized volatility measure and computes a ratio of long-term to short-term volatility. When the ratio is near 1, effective equity exposure is around 100%; when the ratio rises above 1, the index increases exposure above 100% using a total return swap, up to about 200% at a ratio of 2; when the ratio falls below 1, exposure is reduced toward zero by allocating to cash-like instruments. A ±0.05 band around the ratio and an upper ratio limit of 2 reduce rebalancing frequency while bounding leverage.

Investment Proposition

WEBs Defined Volatility SPY ETF (DVSP) provides broad U.S. large-cap equity exposure with a rules-based overlay that adjusts exposure to maintain a pre-set volatility level. The approach seeks to keep equity risk closer to a defined band by scaling exposure up or down as realized market volatility changes, using liquid instruments to effect the adjustment while preserving the core beta profile over a full cycle. The philosophy prioritizes smoother ride characteristics and drawdown management over fully capturing sharp risk-on surges, accepting potential performance give-ups during abrupt rallies in exchange for more consistent risk. Results will generally reflect equity market direction, with tempered swings in highly stressed periods and fuller participation when conditions are calmer. Portfolio roles include a risk-managed equity core, a satellite for volatility targeting sleeves, and a rules-based tool for de-risking within policy ranges. Suitable investors include allocators implementing risk-budgeting frameworks and advisors aiming for “sleep-well” equity exposure that honors volatility parameters. Environments with elevated or oscillating volatility can be constructive; sudden regime flips can challenge scaling. Key risk: model and path-dependency risk from the exposure-adjustment process.
