The underlying Morningstar US Dividend Valuation Index provides rules-based exposure to U.S. dividend payers that combine high yield, strong balance sheets and attractive valuations. It draws from the Morningstar US Market Index, requiring stocks to have paid qualified dividends over the prior 12 months, excluding REITs, and to carry a Morningstar equity analyst fair-value estimate. Eligible names must sit in the highest-yielding half of dividend payers, in the top half of their sector peers by Distance to Default, and outside the 30% most overvalued names on Morningstar’s uncertainty-adjusted price-to-fair-value metric, with 20% buffer ranges around these cut-offs to control turnover. A momentum overlay blocks new entrants in the worst 30% of 12-month total returns and removes incumbents once they fall into the worst 10%. Securities are weighted by “dividend dollars” (float-adjusted shares times dividend per share), with each stock capped at 5% at semi-annual reconstitutions using February and August market data.

Investment Proposition

VanEck Durable High Dividend ETF (DURA) delivers U.S. equity income exposure built around companies combining elevated dividend yield with balance-sheet strength and valuation discipline. The selection philosophy favors businesses with durable cash flows and prudent payout policies, seeking to reduce dividend-cut risk while maintaining participation in equity upside. The portfolio’s emphasis often produces a quality-value tilt, with exposure to cash-generative industries and an underweight to more speculative growth segments; sector composition can evolve as relative valuations change. Return characteristics link to equity beta, income contribution, and style effects: value and quality leadership, stable inflation, and moderate growth tend to be supportive, whereas sharp growth-led rallies or narrow mega-cap momentum regimes may be less favorable. Income is a meaningful component of total return, though distributions can vary with earnings cycles. Use cases include an income sleeve within diversified equities, a satellite dividend tilt to complement broad market holdings, and a “sleep-well” allocation emphasizing fundamental resilience. Suitable investors include retirement-oriented allocators prioritizing sustainable cash flows and outcome-focused advisors seeking volatility moderation. Key risk to monitor: concentration in dividend payers can underperform during speculative growth phases and may increase sector clustering.
