The underlying MSCI Emerging Markets 100% Hedged to USD Index provides float-adjusted market-cap exposure to large- and mid-cap equities across emerging markets while systematically hedging currency risk to USD. It uses the MSCI Emerging Markets Index as its parent, which draws from the MSCI Global Investable Market Indexes universe, requiring companies to exceed a global minimum full market-cap level set at the point where 99% of developed-market free float-adjusted market cap is captured; securities must have free float-adjusted market cap ≥50% of that level and meet emerging-market liquidity screens of at least 15% 3- and 12-month ATVR and 80% 3-month trading frequency over four consecutive quarters.(msci.com) Constituents are weighted by free float-adjusted market cap with no explicit single-stock caps beyond free-float and foreign-ownership adjustments. Currency exposure is hedged monthly by notionally selling each local currency forward against USD using one-month FX forwards in proportion to the index’s currency weights, targeting a 100% hedge.(msci.com) The equity composition follows the parent’s quarterly index reviews (February, May, August, November), while the FX hedge overlay is recalibrated each month.

Investment Proposition

Xtrackers MSCI Emerging Markets Hedged Equity ETF (DBEM) delivers emerging-markets equity exposure while systematically neutralizing developed-market currency fluctuations against the U.S. dollar. The approach seeks to preserve local equity return drivers—country allocation, sector mix, and stock-specific outcomes—while dampening the volatility that foreign-exchange swings can introduce for USD-based investors. Portfolio characteristics generally reflect diversified large- and mid-cap representation with cyclical sensitivities to global trade, commodities, and domestic reform momentum; style exposures can shift with market leadership. Income is secondary and reflects underlying dividend practices; hedge carry and implementation costs modestly influence total return. The strategy is often most additive when the dollar strengthens or when currency volatility is elevated, and may lag unhedged peers during sustained local-currency appreciation. Use cases include a core EM sleeve for liability-aware USD allocators, a tactical overlay to manage FX risk in transition portfolios, and a building block for risk-budgeted frameworks. Suitable investors include institutions seeking EM equity with reduced currency noise and allocators preferring to express FX views separately. A key risk is hedge effectiveness and associated costs that can create performance dispersion versus unhedged exposure.
