The underlying Nasdaq Dorsey Wright DALI Equity Index targets a rules-based, trend-following allocation among U.S.-listed ETFs by owning 100% of the holdings of the highest-ranked “Sleeve Index” as determined by the D.A.L.I. relative-strength tool. Two sleeves exist: U.S. Equity and International Equity. Each sleeve is a modified-equal-weight mix of 35% “core” ETFs and 65% “tactical” ETFs. Core allocations are equally split between FTC and FYC (U.S.) or FDT and FEM (international). Tactical allocations hold, in equal weights, the five ETFs selected in the Dorsey Wright Focus Five (U.S.) or International Focus Five. The top sleeve is selected semi-monthly (monthly in December), with specified skips when international rotates or when NFTY is in the international sleeve; holdings continuously mirror the chosen sleeve and follow its reconstitution schedule. Sleeves rebalance to targets quarterly in January, April, July, and October.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Dorsey Wright DALI 1 ETF (DALI) supplies a rules-based, momentum-driven asset-allocation overlay that rotates among major asset groups—such as U.S. equities, international equities, fixed income, commodities, or cash-like exposures—based on relative strength. The objective is to participate in leadership trends while retaining the flexibility to become defensive when risk appetite weakens, creating a single-ticket tactical sleeve that adapts with market breadth and persistence. This approach can complement strategic allocations by tilting toward assets exhibiting sustained price leadership, acknowledging that trend-following may lag during sharp factor reversals or range-bound markets. Regime behavior typically favors the strategy when trends are strong and diversified across assets; choppier phases can introduce whipsaw and higher trading activity. In practice, DALI can serve as a tactical overlay, a crisis-response sleeve within a broader portfolio, or a sandbox allocation for momentum-aware mandates. Appropriate users include advisors implementing rules-based tilts alongside core holdings and institutions seeking a systematic, cross-asset momentum component. Key risk to monitor is model whipsaw that can elevate turnover and tracking variability during rapid leadership shifts.
