The underlying ProShares Long Online/Short Stores Index provides a rules-based long/short exposure by combining a 100% notional long position in the ProShares Online Retail Index with a 50% notional short position in the Solactive-ProShares Bricks and Mortar Retail Store Index. Both legs draw from companies listed on regulated US exchanges (no OTC), with company-level market cap ≥ USD 500 million and 6-month ADV ≥ USD 1 million. The long leg retains stocks classified as online, e-commerce, or internet and direct marketing retailers while excluding online travel, then applies modified free-float market-cap weighting with single-name caps at 24%, aggregate weights of names >4.5% capped at 50%, non-US exposure capped at 25% and combined parent-company weight capped at 4.5%. The short leg equally weights store-based retailers deriving ≥75% of retail revenue from in-store sales. Constituents are selected annually in June with periodic weight resets; the index retargets its 100/–50 notional exposures on scheduled rebalancing dates.

Investment Proposition

ProShares Long Online/Short Stores ETF (CLIX) targets the retail transformation theme by pairing long exposure to companies deriving a majority of sales from e-commerce with short exposure to traditional store-based retailers. The structure seeks to isolate the secular shift toward digital channels while dampening broad retail cyclicality, using a transparent rules-based process to form both baskets and rebalance as fundamentals and market leadership evolve. The return profile leans on relative performance between online and brick-and-mortar segments; factor tilts often reflect growth and momentum on the long side against value or cyclicality on the short. Income is minimal; risk comes from basis and borrow dynamics as well as theme crowding. Portfolio roles include a thematic satellite expressing digital-commerce views, a tactical overlay to hedge brick-and-mortar concentration, and a potential diversifier within a consumer sleeve. Suitable investors include growth-oriented thematic allocators and advisors employing satellite tilts around core beta. Adoption tailwinds, logistics efficiency, and consumer preference for convenience can be supportive; reversals favoring in-store or tighter financial conditions can weigh. Key risk: short-side mechanics (borrow costs and squeezes) affecting tracking of the intended spread.
