Eligible issues are U.S. dollar bonds from issuers headquartered in, 100% guaranteed by, or with 100% operating assets in emerging markets; new entrants must have ≥USD 500m face amount outstanding and long remaining maturity at entry with a shorter maintenance threshold thereafter. Constituents are market-value weighted, while the Diversified methodology curbs concentration by including only a specified portion of larger countries’ eligible face amounts. The index spans the full rating spectrum and sectors, with no explicit issuer caps beyond the diversification overlay. Reconstitution and reweighting occur monthly on the last U.S. business day; additions and deletions follow the size, maturity and liquidity screens at each month-end cut.

Investment Proposition

iShares J.P Morgan EM Corporate Bond ETF (CEMB) provides diversified access to U.S. dollar-denominated corporate debt issued by emerging-market companies across sectors and regions. The fund seeks broad representation of investment-grade and high-yield issuers through a rules-based, market-value-weighted approach that emphasizes investability and liquidity. Returns are driven mainly by credit spreads and issuer fundamentals, with secondary sensitivity to U.S. rates and global growth. Relative to sovereign-only exposure, corporate bonds introduce business-specific risks and potential income enhancement tied to balance-sheet discipline and refinancing windows. In portfolios, CEMB can serve as an income-oriented satellite credit sleeve, a diversifier to U.S.-centric high yield and investment-grade allocations, or a tactical vehicle to express views on emerging-market corporate credit conditions. Investor profiles most likely include multi-asset allocators pursuing carry across cycles and credit specialists seeking broader issuer breadth than sovereign debt. Regimes that can favor the segment include stable or easing financial conditions; challenging backdrops include broad risk-off episodes, a stronger dollar that tightens external funding, and governance shocks. A fund-specific risk to monitor is country or sector concentration that can rise when issuance is uneven, increasing exposure to localized shocks and downgrade cycles.
