The underlying J.P. Morgan EM Sovereign and Corporate Credit Core Index offers broad U.S. dollar emerging markets bond exposure across sovereign, quasi-sovereign and corporate issuers. Country eligibility follows the index provider’s emerging markets classification. Sovereign and quasi-sovereign bonds must have at least 1 billion USD outstanding and corporate bonds at least 500 million USD, with corporates required to have their headquarters, asset base or collateral fully in emerging markets. All constituents are USD-denominated fixed-, floating- or amortizing-rate bonds with at least 2.5 years to maturity at entry and at least one year remaining at each monthly rebalance; convertible, inflation-linked and defaulted corporate bonds are excluded, and there are no credit-rating constraints. The index is market-value-weighted with diversification rules that cap each country at 10% of index market value, redistributing excess to countries with lower outstanding debt. Rebalancing takes place on the last U.S. business day of each month.

Investment Proposition

iShares J.P. Morgan Broad USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF (BEMB) provides comprehensive exposure to U.S. dollar-denominated emerging-market debt across sovereign, quasi-sovereign, and corporate issuers in a single portfolio. The rules-based construction targets investability and tradability, producing a diversified blend of credit qualities and maturities across the USD EM universe. Return drivers span both interest-rate duration and credit spreads, creating a profile that reacts to moves in core Treasury yields and shifting risk appetite. Income potential reflects compensation for sovereign and corporate default risk, while currency volatility is muted by the dollar denomination. In portfolios, BEMB can serve as a core EM debt sleeve, a one-ticket diversifier to domestic credit, or a transition vehicle when reallocating between sovereign and corporate exposures. Suitable investors include multi-asset allocators seeking broad EM carry without managing multiple building blocks, and fixed-income teams using a benchmark-aware satellite for spread beta. Favorable regimes include stable funding and steady growth; challenging periods include sharp risk-off episodes, abrupt rate repricings, or headline-driven country events. A fund-specific risk to monitor is evolving country concentration and segment mix, which can shift with issuance and alter the portfolio’s credit-rate balance over time.
