The underlying LBMA Gold Price PM (USD) delivers a twice-daily benchmark of the price per fine troy ounce of unallocated gold via an IBA-administered, electronic auction typically beginning 15:00 London time. The auction runs in 30-second rounds; in each round participants submit net buy/sell volumes at the round price. If aggregate imbalance exceeds the tolerance (normally 10,000 oz), the price is adjusted and a new round begins until supply and demand are within threshold, whereupon the benchmark is set and published in USD (and other currencies). The process is IOSCO-aligned and fully auditable, with post-auction transparency reports. If no PM auction is published for a day, the most recent AM price may be used for valuation per trust documents.

Investment Proposition

GraniteShares Gold Trust (BAR) presents direct exposure to the price of gold through physically allocated bullion held in secure vaults, aiming to closely reflect spot gold movements before expenses. The trust structure focuses on simplicity—no mining equities or derivatives—so results primarily track changes in the metal’s price, with tracking difference largely explained by custody and operating costs. Gold’s profile is distinct: it produces no income, often exhibits low correlation to equities and duration assets, and tends to be sensitive to real rates, currency trends, and risk sentiment. BAR can serve as a portfolio ballast during stress, a potential inflation or currency-diversification sleeve, or a strategic store-of-value allocation for long-horizon investors. It fits wealth managers seeking a straightforward precious-metals position and multi-asset strategies that balance growth risk with defensive, non-credit alternatives. Regimes with falling real yields or elevated uncertainty typically favor gold, while rising real yields or broad risk-on phases can be challenging. Key risk to monitor: single-asset concentration and expense drag relative to spot over extended holding periods.
