The underlying MVIS GDP Africa Index provides equity exposure to companies deriving substantial revenues or assets from Africa, including locally incorporated issuers and selected non-local firms. New constituents must have at least 10% free float, full market cap above 150 million USD and strong liquidity, while existing members may remain with 5% free float and 75 million USD. From the investable universe, the index selects the largest eligible stocks by free-float market cap until at least 25 constituents capture roughly 90% of eligible capitalization. Country weights are derived from gross domestic product and capped so that countries represented by only a few stocks carry materially lower maximum weights than larger, more diversified markets. Individual constituents are further constrained by a tiered capping process that limits single-name weights to about 8%, with lower caps for non-local stocks, and the index is rebalanced quarterly in March, June, September and December.

Investment Proposition

VanEck Africa Index ETF (AFK) provides broad, diversified access to companies tied to Africa’s structural growth themes across financials, materials, communications, consumer, and infrastructure. The portfolio seeks equity beta to economies benefiting from urbanization, rising connectivity, and resource development, using a rules-based approach that captures firms listed locally and abroad with meaningful African revenue exposure. Return drivers are cyclical and policy-sensitive: improving terms of trade, capital investment, and currency stability can support multiples, while tighter global financial conditions and commodity downturns can challenge earnings and liquidity. Style exposures often lean toward value and financial cyclicals with occasional quality or growth tilts where consumer and telecom platforms scale. In multi-asset portfolios, AFK can function as a satellite emerging/frontier allocation, a thematic mandate for continent-specific development, or a currency-opportunistic sleeve. Investors most suited include long-horizon allocators seeking differentiated regional diversification and opportunistic EM specialists pursuing frontier beta and re-rating potential. Adding exposure can be timely on improving reform momentum or when discounted currencies stabilize. A key risk to monitor is single-country concentration and benchmark eligibility rules that can amplify local political or liquidity shocks.
