Assets invested in smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs listed globally reached a new record of $607 billion at the end of July 2017, according to data from ETF industry consultant ETFGI.

As of the end of July 2017, assets invested in smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs listed globally reached a new record high of $607bn.
Record levels of assets were also reached at the end of the month for equity smart beta ETFs/ETPs listed in the United States at $538.6bn, in Europe at $44.8bn, in Canada at $14.8bn and in Asia Pacific (ex-Japan) at $5.6bn.
July saw smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs gather net inflows of $6.4bn globally. Combining market moves and net inflows, smart beta equity ETF/ETP assets have increased by 17.8% year-to-date, from $515.2bn to $607.2bn, with a five-year compound annual growth rate of 31.9%.
The vast majority (89%) of smart beta assets are invested in 621 ETFs/ETPs that are domiciled and listed in the United States while 76% of global smart beta ETF/ETP assets are invested in 499 products that provide exposure to the US equity market.
iShares gathered the largest smart beta ETF/ETP net inflows in July with $1.5bn, followed by Vanguard with $1.5bn and PowerShares with $0.7bn.
Products tracking S&P Dow Jones’ smart beta indices gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows in July with $2.4bn, followed by CRSP with $1.3bn and FTSE Russell with $0.5bn.
At the end of July 2017, there were 1,264 smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs, with 2,159 listings from 154 providers on 40 exchanges in 33 countries.
